The National Assembly Public Petitions Committee, chaired by Vihiga Member of Parliament, Hon. Kivai Kagesi, has embarked on a report writing retreat to finalize the consideration of five petitions and fact finding visits in Nandi County.
Among the top priorities of the Committee is Public Petition No. 52 of 2023, tabled by Wajir North Member of Parliament, Hon. Ibrahim Abdi. The petition calls for a nationwide ban on the use of asbestos as a roofing material due to its well-documented health risks.
Another key petition being finalized is Petition No 59 of 2023 that involves the settlement of squatters in the Ontulili area of Mount Kenya Forest, an issue that intertwines historical land injustices, land rights, and conservation. The Committee’s report aims to propose practical solutions that uphold environmental protection while ensuring the dignity and resettlement of affected families.
In addition, the Committee will conclude its review of petition No 80 of 2023 regarding the release of capitation funds for Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE). The petition, submitted by KUPPET Secretary General Mr. Akelo Misori, highlights long-standing arrears dating back to the 2019 academic year and subsequent financial years through 2022/2023.
The Committee is also set to finalize consideration of Petition number 4 of 2023 regarding the delayed adjudication and settlement of squatters after the expiry of lease of Macalder Mines Limited Land in Migori County.
The Committee will also tour four Constituencies who have Petitions before it. The Members will tour Nandi to consider and engage residents on three separate petitions, among them, Petition on the Mismanagement of Nandi Teachers Sacco and ownership of Mwalimu Plaza Building in Kapsabet Town in Nandi County, Petition on the Illegal land acquisition of parcels of land registered as Kapkakaron farm in Nandi Hills Sub-County, Nandi County, and a Petition on the Resettlement of Squatters in Koibem Village, in Kapsabet in Nandi County.
