Karen, Friday, May 2, 2025.

Members of the National Assembly’s Blue Economy, Water and Irrigation Committee, led by Chairperson Hon. Kangogo Bowen (Marakwet East), have paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, following his untimely demise on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

Hon. Were, who was serving his second term as the Member of Parliament for Kasipul, was a long-serving and dedicated member of the Committee throughout both terms.

In his tribute, Hon. Bowen praised the late legislator’s unwavering commitment and active participation in the Committee's work.

"Hon. Ong’ondo Were was one of our most proactive members. Despite also serving as Vice-Chairperson of the Cohesion Committee, he consistently made time for our Committee. In fact, I often found him already seated whenever I arrived for meetings," Hon. Bowen recalled.

He further highlighted the impact of Hon. Were’s efforts on his constituency.

"This was his primary committee, and I believe the people of Kasipul can attest to the many water projects he championed over the years."

Reflecting on their personal bond, Hon. Bowen fondly remembered the late MP’s steadfast support during challenging times.

"During the last Parliament, when our Committee faced leadership wrangles, Hon. Ong’ondo Were stood firmly by me. From then on, we built a strong friendship."

Committee Vice-Chairperson Hon. Marwa Kitayama (Kuria East) also paid tribute, highlighting both professional respect and a personal connection.

"Whenever I had a function, Sir Charles was just a phone call away. He was jovial, kind-hearted, and always ready to offer ideas and support. We’ve lost a genuine team player," he said.

Hon. Kitayama also noted the deep bond between their families.

"As a family, we are deeply saddened by this loss. Even in heaven, he remains our dear friend. May you find strength during this difficult time."

In his concluding remarks, Hon. Bowen called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hon. Were’s death.

"We trust the investigative agencies will ensure justice is served and those responsible are brought to book. On behalf of Parliament and the Committee, we extend our heartfelt condolences and assure the family of our full support during this painful journey."

The Committee Members were accompanied by the Committee Secretariat and were received by Homa Bay County Governor, Hon. Gladys Wanga.
