The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, has proposed the creation of a specialized police unit to combat the escalating threat of human trafficking in Kenya.
He cautioned that human trafficking continues to evolve in complexity, often penetrating communities through discreet and deceptive means.
Hon. Murkomen made the remarks while appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security, chaired by Narok West MP, Hon. Gabriel Tongoyo.
He was responding to a series of Statements sought by Members of Parliament on various national security concerns.
In his submission, the Cabinet Secretary underscored the need for a focused and structured response to trafficking, likening the proposed unit to existing specialized divisions such as the Anti-Narcotics Unit.
“I don’t want to be a roadside declaration kind of person, but as we continue to establish other special units, a dedicated police unit for human trafficking may soon become necessary. The scale and complexity of the problem demand it,” he stated.
During the session, Hon. Murkomen also addressed a range of issues raised through Members’ Statements, including the delay in appointing Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency, the killing of Mr. Isaak Abdulla Jarso in Kone, delays and inconsistencies in the operationalization and gazettement of administrative units, violent clashes between police and residents in Likuyani Constituency and the disappearance and subsequent death of Ms. Lydin Tokeshi Bukhala.
Due to time constraints, the Committee resolved to invite the Cabinet Secretary for a follow-up session to complete his responses and further deliberate on other critical matters of national security.
