The National Assembly Public Petitions Committee, chaired by Hon. Ernest Kavai Kagesi (Vihiga Constituency) is reviewing seven petitions on an effort reducing the backlog of public petitions awaiting consideration.

The Public Petitions Committee serves as a vital conduit for citizen participation in the legislative process, offering a structured avenue for individuals and organizations to bring matters of public concern before Parliament.

Members of the Committee began the retreat with the main purpose of completing seven (7) petitions presented to the National Assembly.

This is in line with Hon. Kagesi's commitment of ensuring that the Committee considers all Public Petitions brought before it in a timely and thorough manner when he took over the leadership of the Committee in March this year.

"We are committed to diligently addressing the matters raised by Kenyans through these petitions," stated Hon. Kagesi. "This retreat provides the necessary focused environment to thoroughly review each case and prepare comprehensive reports for presentation to the National Assembly."

Among the petitions under review are, Public Petition No. 40 of 2023, filed by Mr. Tom Macharia, seeking for the Delimitation of Electoral Boundaries, Public Petition No. 63 of 2023, by Mr. Erick Kabuyefu on behalf of former workers of Bohemian Flowers Limited (Nakuru County), addressing allegations of unfair redundancy, summary dismissal, and suspension, and Public Petition No. 15 of 2023 by Hon. Florence Jematia, MP on the Declaration of Mukutani Forest as a Public Forest.

The Committee also considered Public Petition No. 46 of 2023 on the delayed payment of retirement dues and pension benefits for retired teachers, Public Petition No. 47 of 2023, presented by the Member of Parliament for Mwingi West, Hon. Charles Ngusya, MP, on the deployment of classroom teachers as head teachers in schools nationwide, and Public Petition No. 67 of 2023, on the dismissal from employment of Mr. Gerald Muli Kiilu by ABSA Bank (formerly Barclays Bank) Prestige Centre.

The Committee is expected to table all seven (7) reports before the National Assembly for consideration in due course.
